Consolidation

Author: Angie Labels:: , , ,

Well, I started consolidation on the 6th November. My weight being 60.1. I started with a celebration meal which was pasta and for lunch had a cheese sandwich. The next day I had put on a kilo, ouch! However, it was also my TOM so I think that is why. My weight stayed the same for several days and then went down to 60.3, 60, and finishing on Saturday, a week later, at 59.6.

The next day it went up to 60kg where it remained until Thursday when it went down to 59.8. then on Friday to 59.7, finishing today at 59.2, 2 weeks later. However, today I have had unbearable headaches due to a virus and working on my PC all day and I have given in and taken throughout the course of the day 2 large pain killers. I can feel the water retention already! have had a green tea though. Will have another later.

During the weeks I have had mainl salad and I have planned the evening meals to include soup, chicken, mince etc. The usual really only with veg. My protein only day is a Monday as that will work out better for training and the events which are always at the weekend. Starch day is a Wednesday (pasta) and celebration meal is a Saturday (also pasta, I love pasta! but a bit of a pudding too). I must admit to a vodka - large - on a Friday and a glass of wine with my celebration meal on a Saturday.

So, that is food mapped out.

I am running at least 5k 5 times a week, up to 10k. I have also started interval training. I am only swimming for 1 30min session a week which is not enough and want to increase that but with the weather turning colder the sea is not an option at the moment and the pool is expensive. Need to work that one out. As soon as I have mastered the bike I will start training on that too. On Tuedsays I work out on the free gym equiptment at the local beach and  I still try and walk every day.

So, this blog is going to turn over to my training efforts for my planned events. They are:

  • The whole sea swim season next year
  • Arrecife Marathon next weekend, just the 1/4 or 10K
  • Duathlon on the 11th Jan (if I can ride a bike by then!)
  • The Volcan triathlon which I think is in May
  • The wine run in June
  • Music Marathon 20k in October
  • and maybe, just maybe, the Ocean Lava 1/2 iron Man in September
  • Finally for the year 2011 the whole Arrecife Marathon
Will also keep the blog updated about my consolidation progress.

Wish me luck!!!

Day 118 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels:: , ,

Well, today I reached my target weight in pounds but still have 300 grams to go until I am 60.9. However, I think I will put some weight back on tomorrow as was dehydrated after yesterday.

Yesterday I took part in the Music Marathon which is a charity event organised by the chap who has the franchise for Iron Man here in Lanzarote. It is a race for EVERYONE and a good place for me to start to see how I feel about running.

Needless to say I loved it!! The only pressure on me I put there myself as I was only doing the 1/8th of a marathon, just over 5k, where many people opted to walk so there was no chance of me being last by an hour or two!

As it happens I think I did quite well for me as I have only been training for a month. I did the distance in 35 mins which is better than my training time. And now I have the confidence to train for the 10k Arrecife marathon which is in November.

The event on the day was very good. There were kids running from my school and house who placed so I was very pleased about that. The organisation was fantastic. The fact the temperature sored into what must have been touching the 40's causing strong runners to collapse is not Kenneths fault!

And thank god for the fire men who hosed runners as they ran by to cool us all down.

So, I weigh today 61.2kg which is 9stone and 8lbs but as I say I fully expect to go up a bit.

Day 89 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels:: , , ,

Have had quite a busy month. Back to school, which is never nice. And training for the Graciosa swim which is a sea swim of 2800m. Did it in 1hr and 15 mins doing breast stroke which was a good time for me. Have another swim tomorrow of 1600m in Arrecife.

Weight loss is still good though activity has been reduced due to being back at school. Have started swimming in a pool, Las Marinas, where Alice goes to a swimming club. Also keeping up the walking and hope to start running next week.

Other things that have been up to? Alice has had several dance shows. Went to a fantastic boxing tournament in Arrieta which had two of Dav's fighters who won, and the Spanish champion who is a local boy. Last night went to see several bands play in PDC so was a late night. Good though, apart from being sober when everyone else was pissed!!!

Todays weight: 65.3 10st 3lbs Only 9lbs to loose 24.5 on BMI calculator, started at 30! From Obiese to healthy in 3 months, Yipee!!!

Day 66 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

I have been very hectic enjoying the last days of the summer holidays and going back to school. The new term has started and here I am sitting at my desk, boo hoo. Anyways, I met my mini target of 69.9kg before school started and 2 days into school I am 68.8kg which is good. Of course, the worry is I will not be able to keep up with the exercise. I have so far managed 2 walks and a swim in the 2 days back so that is not too bad but it will be down hill from here I am sure as tiredness sets in.
I had a blood test yesterday morning to see where I am with my anemia so fingers crossed!!
Alice has started a swimming club in a pool in Costa Teguise so I have been able to grab 1 swim in their 25m pool. It was better than swimming in the see for swimming faster over a short distance. When I came out of the pool my face was bright red!
Weight: 68.8kg, 10 stone 11lbs. My BMI is 26, only 2.8kg off a 25!!

Yey!!!

Gotta share, 70.9kg which is 1kg off my mini target then only 1 stone and 6lbs to go, woo hoo!!

Drinking water before meals helps dieting

Author: Angie Labels::

The BBC has reported drinking water before meals can help people to lose weight, says a US study.

Over the course of 12 weeks, those drinking water lost about 15.5lbs while the others lost about 11lbs.
A previous study found that middle-aged and older people who drank two glasses of water before eating a meal ate between 75 and 90 fewer calories during that meal.

Of course, we all knew this!

Day 50 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

eeek! Only 2 weeks until school starts back. OMG. And I really want to be 11 stone by then. Why? Because, 2 years ago when I was training for my fight which was on halloween, I was 11 stone. So, as a gauge of success, I want to weigh 11 stone a month earlier than that 2 years later. Make sense?!! Plus, I know when school starts I will not be able to exercise as much.
However, I have had an almost bad week. On Wednesday I had a glass of wine to numb the pain of my A Level results and yesterday the kids cooked lemmon drizzle muffins and I had half of one. But I had to encourage them! Went for a long walk after!
For the last couple of days we have all had a cold bug so I have been unable to go swimming but I have kept up the walking. It is also TOM so I am getting tired. Back on the iron for 10 days.
In the last 10 days I have lost 1.5kg so not too bad really. So, another 5lbs to loose in 2 weeks to meet my own semi target. And of course, don't forget, the big 2800M swin is in 4 weeks. So have to keep the swimming up before then.
I am going to investigate a pool that has been recomended to me this afternoon. That will help me keep up the swimming when the term begins.
Todays weight: 72.1kg, 159lbs, 11 stone and 5lbs.
Nearly forgot, another milestone, have lost 10kg in the 50 days!

Day 40 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels:: , ,

I have had a couple of days going no where with my weight but it started to shift again and I am now 73.6kg. This week I have done no walking up hill but intend to do one later this evening when it is not as hot. Have walked to the beach twice and went to Club La Santa on Wednesday with the family to meet the kids uncle, girlfirend etc and we all had fun in the family pool, kayaking and swimming in the 50m pool. I swam 1500m. However, I also had a slip up as I ate a large ice cream and had a beer. Guess the output was still greater than the input as the next day I had lost 500g! Last night I also had some goats cheese (Lanzarote cheese) and still lost 400g today. Hope it keeps going in this direction as I want to loose another 4kg in 3 and a half weeks. So, total weight 73.6kg, 162lbs, 11 stone 8lbs.
Need to still loose 2 stone in total.

Walks to the beach

Author: Angie Labels::

As I do not have a car during the week the only ways to get to the beach are to catch the bus, hitch a lift, or walk. I opt for walking. It is a nice wlak down the mountain and of course good exercise. The walk takes 1 and a half hours and is 6KM. The sea also seems alot more inviting after a long walk! We do this, me and the kids, at least 3 times a week. My youngest always kicks up a fuss before we set off but they are all very good on the walk.

Day 34 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

Still on a downward trend, some days faster than others. The diet is going smoothly and is not causing any concern. We are still managing to have family meals and infact it suits my other half as we are now eating fish, which I have never liked before because of the bones. We have had fillets on mackeral, sardines, hake (didn't like that too much actually), and tuna steaks. Very yum and healthy. I have been eating bolognaise with strips of courgette, chicken with salad, chicken curry, home made burgers, and stir fries with fresh vegetable and either chicken or beef. I did have a vodka and diet coke last night which is the first drink in a month. Unfortunately the measure was 4 fingers as the bar just sloshes it in. Wont have another drink now for another month I think. I am now going to try and loose as much as possible before returning to school in September, that is in 4 weeks time.
Todays weight: 74.5kg 11 stone 10lbs, which is a total weight loss of 2lbs in 6 days.

Day 28 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels:: ,

Well, it seems to be going well. It has been 2 years since I was a this weight which is great. I was a lot healthier then mind as I was training in the gym for a fight. However, it is also when my Anemia started.
I have worked out that if I walk for more than an hour a day I can loose up to 500g but if I have an easy day because of tiredness, my weight stays the same. So, I will try and walk every day. The weather has become VERY hot now it is August so need to do a hill walk first thing or later in the evening. Yesterday I walked in the evening after being on the beach in the afternoon where it was soooo hot. Clouds were coming down the mountain and I had to walk into what felt like a wind machine! Good exercise though.
So weight: Today I weigh 75.4kg which is 12stone and 12lbs or 1661lb.

Day 24 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

WOW! Lost 500g yesterday, now weigh 76.4kg. Been about a year since I saw this weight. Another nth of a lb and I have lost a stone.
Have to admit, didn't eat much yesterday. After spending the morning trying to catch my escaped hunting dog Toby with my daughter and worrying about the locals, I really lost my apettite. Wonder if I put that weight back on?
I did have a lovely mackeral yesterday which was grilled with lemmon juice and parsley.
Total weight 76.4kg, which is just over 168 lbs.

Walking in the morning

Author: Angie Labels:: ,

I normally walk in the afternoon when the sun is already high in the sky and very hot. This morning the light was so different it was lovely. When I reached the Risco and looked to Haria and the coast at Arrieta I could see the sea twinkling. I wish I had my good camera with me.

The walk started with the clouds overhead and a blustery wind but ended with a warming breeze and hot sun. It was lovely! How easy is a brisk 2 hour walk when you live here?!

In 10 days I have lost one inch off my waist, in 3 weeks three and a half inches
In 10 days I have lost one inch off the top of my arm and half an inch off my thigh
Well, how cool is that?!!!
Total weight 77.3kg

Mistakes

Author: Angie Labels::

It is so easy to make mistakes which could make a difference. The book says one thing but people who pay for coaching get a different picture. Fair? I don't think so. I cannot afford coaching and I am sure many others cannot either. Yet we deserve as much support if we have comitted to the diet. Anyway, thank god for the Facebook group and everyones support is all I can say! The most valuable tool.

So, milk, yoghurt, quark, fromage frais; despite being on the as much as you like list there is a top limit according to the group:

Up to 3tbsp skimmed milk powder, and 250mls skimmed milk and up to 1L yog/ff/quark per day on Cruise

Day 20 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

Well, I am 77.6kg and my period started on Wednesday which means I managed to loose weight the week before when I was retaining water but I think the asparagus and green tea helped. The weight loss has slowed down at the end of this week so I do hope it picks up again.

Egg Revelation

Author: Angie Labels::

I have got really annoyed about the issue of how many eggs you can eat in a day on this diet. It seems alot of people have been confused about how many eggs we are allowed a day on the Dukan Diet and no one has had the deffinitive answer, with questions going unanswered by the Dukan team.

In the end I emailed Dukan to ask them to clarify. This was their first reply:

If you do not have a problem with cholesterol, it is recommended that you can eat one egg yolk a day, and as many egg whites as you like.

I replied to the email pointing out that this information is contradictory to the book which clearly states eggs as been allowed and as many as you want. This was their second reply:

If you don't have any problems with cholesterol it is not going to hurt you to have eaten more than one egg a day, they are an excellent source of protein. There seems to have been some hysteria in the UK about egg intake at the moment which is why we posted on our FAQ the information I told you about. Please do not worry.

So, it seems the Dukan team do not want to be seen promoting the consumotion of eggs because of the problems of cholesterol and health. However, reading between the lines they can be unlimited.

Here is a link regarding egg consumption from the British Heart Foundation

The Dukan Diet: my experience and advice

Author: Angie Labels::

This is in extract of an article I have written for Plus Size and Tall:

The Dukan Diet has been devised over many years by a French doctor, Dr Dukan, who has spent his career helping people to loose weight permanently. The diet is designed in four phases to help you loose weight fast and then help you maintain your weight when you reach your goal. I have just completed the second week of the Dukan Diet and so far have lost 8.3lb’s. But is this diet a fad or does it really work?

As a girl in my 20’s I was very active and never weighed more than 7 stone. However, with each child (I have three) I put on more weight and my lifestyle had become more sedentary. When I had my third child in my mid 30’s the weight did not shift! A story common to all of us I am sure.
The largest size I think I have been is a large size 16, which over the years I got down to a size 14 where the weight remained stable with exercise.
A year ago I became very anaemic and as a result was unable to climb stairs easily let alone exercise! My weight also accelerated and I felt very uncomfortable and very lethargic.
As soon as I had my anaemia under control (which has taken ten months) I decided to try and improve my fitness however, to do this I felt I needed to loose some weight first. For the first time in my life I decided to go on a diet and buy some scales.

Day 15 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

Wow, weight is falling off at the moment. Making up for last week! Today I weighed 77.8kg which is a loss of 600g or over a pound. Maybe the asparagus and green tea is having some effect. Because I live in an arid country I do notice when the heat picks up I do hold water, I feel it in my hands.
Anyway, after I do some work this morning I am going to go for a long walk. Think I will give the beach and swimming a miss today.

Day 14 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

At last! My weight has shifted by 500g. Phew! Lets see if it continues to fall again. Although, many women on the cruise from the Facebook group say that they only weigh themselves once a week. Not sure I am ready to do that yet.
I have been keeping up with my swimming and hope to step it up a bit next week. The only problem I am finding is that I find it hard to warm up after a swim.
I have been walking every day too but have taken a days rest from the abs etc exercise as I think I over did it and ouch!
Food has been quite successful. For my PV days this week I have had a chicken stir fry, yummy, bolgnaise with strips of courgette, and today will be having roast chicken and salad.
I have also started drinking green tea and eating asparagus as they are a diuretic and increase metabolism.
Well, I am off to the beach this afternoon for more swimming. Fingers crossed I loose some more weight tomorrow!
Opps, nearly forgot to write weight
Weight: 78.4kg  172.8 lbs 12.3 stone

Day 11 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

On Monday I weighed in at 79.2kg and on Tuesday I weighed 78.9kg where I have been stuck since so not a happy bunny :(
The cruise diet is much easier now I have added vegetables every other day to my diet. I have also started drinking green tea which is OK.
The sun has been shining and have manged to get on the beach pretty much every day so have started my swimming training. A bit of a slow start as I am so unfit but good to get back into it. Got a new pair of goggles too which was exciting for me. Have been walking every day and have just startd my core exercises. Inches are coming off (2.5 off waist and 1 off bust) but I wish my weight would move again.
Added wheat bran to my oatbran today to see if it will get things moving as a bit constipated.
Just a little PS: wheat bran works!

Day 5 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

Total Lost 5.20lbs
This is the heaviest I weighed before my anemia and I started boxing, so kinnda back where I stared and I know I can loose the weight with exercise alone so looking forward to exercising and diet!
I only lost 200g yesterday which is a bit of a dissapointment as I was hoping to loose more but maybe it is because the fish I had last night was quite salty so I am holding water. My knuckes do feel a bit swollen...
Anyway, beach today, maybe walk, I am not sure but will deffinately be going to enjoy the sun.
Weight 79.8kg 175.92 lbs 12.5 stone

Day 3 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

I have been trying to weigh myself at the same time each day which is in the morning, so after 2 whole days of the diet I have lost 1.4kg or 3.081bs. Not too bad. I think yesterday I overate as the meatloaf I had for dinner was yummy, and the kids liked it too which was a result!
I had the galette on Monday which was nice but had run out of Quark yesterday so had a yoghurt in the evening with the oat bran and some sweetner but felt too full after. Think I ate too late to be honest.
I am snacking on crab sticks which is working out well.
Walking is going well and have walked every day with the dog.
Drinking lots of water.
I do feel tired but I always feel tired anyway so do not know if it is because of the diet. On the thrid day and do not feel europhic as the book suggests!
Weight on the 7th July 2010: 80.6kg (177.69Ibs, 12.69 stone) A loss of 1.4kg or 3.081bs

Day 1 on the Dukan Diet

Author: Angie Labels::

I am going to give the Dukan Diet ago. I have read the book, noted the sentance which said it was good for anemia sufferers, and how not to take oat bran with supplements such as iron. So, am thinking will use the oatbran galette as a snack in the afternoon. I am grateful I can still drink tea (which, incidently, also stops the absorbtion of iron) as I could not survive a day without my cuppa! I am also going to start exercising again. I am not ready to go back to the boxing gym yet but it is certainly my aim to do so. I am going to add daily walks to my routine to include walking up steep hills in a bid to improve my stamina and breathing which are shot to pieces due to my anemia. I am going to skip daily too (a good boxers exercise). And I WILL take my iron as prescribed, something I hate to do but it allows me to get through the days without headaches and fatigue - almost. Although I am concerned about my new advised regime of only taking the iron 10 days in each month. This is because I have been told I need to take the iron for the rest of my days. Yuck! I am going to go to to the Docs this week to arrange another blood test and ask him for a medical certificate so I can do the Graciosa inter island swim in September. Gotta start training, but the sun needs to come out first otherwise the sea will feel toooo chilly.
So, as you can see I am full of good intentions but will it happen. YES! I am dertmined to loose weight so I can get fit again and feel good about myself and take part in all the activities I want to.
But why the Dukan diet? It just makes sense, and seems very do'able. I have two months off work now as it is the summer holidays so that seems an ideal time to start. My biggest worries are fitting it into the kids routine, we always eat together so need to match the menus to include them. I am also concerned at the choice available to me on this rock that I live on as it is very limited. Oh, and of course the cost. We are a family of 5 so normally stick to pasta and veg as it is so much cheaper, especially here.
Well, enough rambling. Today I weighed myself (had to buy some scales first!) and it was not pretty. I have had breakfast, a 0 fat yoghurt, and i gotta say, yuck! I am not a yoghurt fan anyway and certainly not in the morning. Think I will have to have scrambled eggs in the future.
Weight on the 5th July 2010: 82.1kg (181Ibs, 12.9 stone)
And this is my weight loss plan, although I intend to do the attack for a week - 7 days.
